” John Stearns played with a greater sense of zeal and grit than anyone else. Last month, he literally forced himself to go to Old Timers’ Day so he could see old colleagues and coworkers.
John Stearns & His Debut
Nearly all of Stearns’ time in the major leagues was spent with the Mets. He was born in Denver, Colorado, and was selected by Philadelphia in round two of the 1973 draught out of the University of Colorado. With his professional debut with the Phillies in 1974, but he only appeared in one game for them before being dealt to the Mets as part of the Tug McGraw deal.
He scored 312 runs while batting.259,.341, and.375 with the Mets. And has by far the most stolen bases of any Mets catcher, with Jerry Grote coming in second with 14.
Joe Torre, Stearns’ former teammate who eventually became his manager, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to speak with him at Citi Field a few weeks ago. Nobody played the game as hard as John did. He never had a foul mood when he visited the park. There was only one thing he wanted: to win. Four-time All-Star status is a remarkable achievement.
Howie Rose, a Mets radio announcer, tweeted a remembrance of Stearns, who not only entered the field for Old Timers’ Day but also took several swings in the batting cage.
Although he was insistent, Rose wrote, “We did not expect him to travel to Old Timers’ Day.” “He desired one last visit with his friends. And even took a few swings in the cage while coaching first base. The Dude all the way through. RIP.”

Behind Grote and Mike Piazza, Stearns, a right-handed hitter who walked more often than he struck out, is the Mets’ third-highest career hit producer among catchers. Stearns is one of just 35 players to have played at least 75% of their career games at catcher and be selected for four All-Star teams since integration.
Lee Mazzilli, Stearns’ six-year teammate, remarked, “I am crushed.” Having John around was a pleasure. The game was very important to him. Upon seeing him at the batting cage on Old Timers’ Day, I was astonished. That only highlighted his fierce competitiveness.
Justin Stearns, his brothers Richard and William, and his sister Carla are Stearns’ surviving family members. Stearns and his wife, Martha Jo, married after the 1977 season and they had a son, named Justin. In July 2022, Stearns was diagnosed with stage IV prostate cancer and died of cancer on September 15, 2022, in his native Denver.
His net worth stood at $3 million.
