On Monday, it was announced that John Sattler, a renowned figure in the world of rugby league and former South Sydney Rabbitohs player, had passed away at the age of 80.
Since then, Sattler, who is famously known for playing in a grand final with a broken jaw, has been honored with numerous tributes from the rugby community.

Among those who have paid tribute to the late legend is the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, who described Sattler as “a true gentleman off the field” and a “tough” player on the field. He added,
“He was an inspirational leader who, decades after his retirement, took his rightful place at the front of the marches for South Sydney’s reinstatement.”

John Sattler was a well-known Australian rugby player. He has been in the news because he passed away recently at the age of 80.
His full name was John William Sattler. He was born on July 28, 1942, in Telarah, New South Wales, Australia. Later, he and his family moved to Kurri Kurri. He was of German descent, as his grandfather was a German immigrant.
John Sattler did his schooling at Marist Brothers High School in Maitland, New South Wales.
He was married, however, nothing much is known about his wife apart from that she was named Barbara Sattler. He was also the father of four children named Scott, Matthew, Kristy, and Daniel. Scott and Mathew were also rugby players.
He died on March 20, 2023, in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. At the time of his death, he was 80 years old.
His career
At the age of 16, John Sattler began playing rugby league with Kurri Kurri, and in 1962, he represented Newcastle against a visiting British team. In 1963, he became a member of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, where he subsequently became captain in 1967 and guided the team to four premiership wins in 1967, 1968, 1970, and 1971.
His most renowned performance was in the 1970 grand final, when he played despite having a fractured jaw to assist Souths in defeating Manly. Later on, he joined Brisbane Western Suburbs in 1973. He was chosen for Australia’s 1967 tour of Britain and France, as well as the 1969 and 1971 Australian tours of New Zealand when he served as captain.
In 1974, John Sattler ended his career in the professional rugby league. Thereafter, he participated in one of the failed attempts to establish a Brisbane-based side for the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership.
He passed away after battling dementia.
