The parents of John Anthony Aniston were Antonios Anastassakis (1889-1965) and Stella Joanne (née Koume; 1899–1992), and he was born on the Greek island of Crete. The family moved from Crete to the United States when John was two years old. His father, Antonios, anglicized the family names after immigrating to America.
In Chester, Pennsylvania, the Anistons started a restaurant. John received his Bachelor of Arts in Theater from Penn State University. He became an intelligence officer in the US Navy after graduating from college, serving in Panama on active duty for a while and then in the reserve.
