At the FIA World Finals, British racing champion Joe Turney was horribly injured when his kart was struck by another vehicle. The startling incident happened on lap ten of the competition at Franciacorta, Italy, a report suggests in The Sun.
The 22-year-old Turney had been leading until Gabriel Gomez overtook him. The determined foe managed to retake the lead, but a collision sent both of them off track. Even though he had lost all hope of victory after being passed by eight competitors, Turney dragged his kart back into the circuit to restart. Nacho Tunon, a Spaniard, came haring around the corner as he was doing this, tripping Turney and spraining his ankle.
For the factory Kart Republic driver, it marked the end of a rollercoaster of a race. He qualified 23rd overall and fifth fastest in his group, but after placing third in his first two heats and finishing 13th, fifth, fourth, and second, he moved up to ninth in the intermediate classification of the competition.
Turney was brought onto the grass, and a stretcher was quickly dispatched for him, which caused the race to be put under yellow flag circumstances. Then, the yellow flag was changed to a red one, stopping the action. Later, the race was restarted, with Russian Kirill Kutskov taking the lead and winning.
