JoAnne Epps Acting President of Temple University passes away
The incident took place on Tuesday during an ongoing memorial service at the Temple University in Philadelphia. JoAnne Epps suddenly fell ill onstage and collapsed, following which EMS staff tended to her and rushed her to a nearby hospital.
According to a statement from the university’s official website:
While attending a memorial service at Temple for Charles L. Blockson, curator of the Blockson Collection, President Epps became ill. She was transported to Temple University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead around 3:15 p.m.”
The University further announced the death of their acting president in the statement. It stated:
Dear Member of the Temple Community, it is with deep heartbreak that we write to inform you that Temple University Acting President JoAnne A. Epps suddenly passed away this afternoon.”
Cause of death
According to reports, JoAnne succumbed to death despite continued efforts to resuscitate her. As of now, officials have not disclosed the exact cause of her death.

Following the tragic news about the death, concerns against the university’s policy on COVID-19 vaccine requirements have come forward. According to the official website of the Temple University, Philadelphia dropped its COVID-19 vaccination mandate only just recently. Meanwhile, Twitter user @MJTruthUltra shared how JoAnne Epps’ sudden death could be related to her being fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
However, no major news outlet, nor the Temple University have corroborated the relation between JoAnne’s death and the COVID-19 vaccination. Interestingly, despite COVID-19 shots no longer being an obligation, the official website of the university still strongly recommends it.

JoAnne A. Epps was an American law professor who was born in Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania, United States. Besides that, she also works as a legal author and acting president of Temple University. She has also served as the executive vice president back in the past.

JoAnne Epps has worked with the Temple University for over four decades now. She was appointed as the Acting President earlier this year in April 2023 after the former President Jason Wingard resigned. She started out her career at the university as a teenager working at the campus bookstore.
She later joined as a member of the faculty back in 1985 and has since served in important positions. She has served in the following roles at the university:
