The Joan Gamper Trophy
The Joan Gamper Trophy is an annual exhibition match, which is hosted annually in August by Barcelona at Camp Nou. The match is hosted before the start of the new incoming season. The game is named in honour of Joan Gamper a Swiss-born legend who was a founding member, player, and president of Barcelona. Every year, Barcelona invites various teams from across different countries to compete in the match.
Joan Gamper Trophy history
The first-ever Joan Gamper Trophy was held in 1966 with club president Enric Llaudet (1961-1968) inaugurating the bout. For the first 30 years, the Joan Gamper Trophy featured four teams competing in two semi-finals and a final match. During the first edition of the mini-tournament, Barcelona competed alongside Anderlecht, Nantes, and FC Koln. The Catalans defeated FC Koln in the final 3-1 and won the trophy. Since 1997, the Trophy has followed a one-off game, where penalties deciding the winner if a match ends in a draw after 90 minutes. Since 2021, there is also a Women’s Gamper Trophy.
2023 Joan Gamper Trophy teams
This year for the first time ever, Camp Nou will not host the Joan Gamper Trophy. Instead, reports suggest that Barcelona will host this year’s opponents, Tottenham, at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys. The stadium is currently the temporary home ground for 2023/24 and it is located in the Montjuic neighbourhood. The match will take place on 9 August. However, some reports suggest that Barça are also looking to host the exhibition bout in Gamper’s homeland, Switzerland.
