Prediction
On Saturday, the Firenze Open semifinals will feature Mikael Ymer and JJ Wolf.
In the Citi Open quarterfinals, when Ymer lost to eventual winner Nick Kyrgios, he turned in his best performance of the year. The Swedish player defeated Borna Gojo and Andreas Seppi to earn a spot in the Firenze Open main draw. He beat Tim van Rijthoven 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round before beating Aslan Karatsev 6-1, 6-7(6), 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. In the round of eight, Ymer defeated Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 6-2 to go to the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Wolf defeated opponents including Denis Shapovalov and Holger Rune to reach his first quarterfinal of the year at the Citi Open before losing to Andrey Rublev. He also made it it to the third round of the US Open. The American won the opening match of the Firenze Open against Francisco Maestrelli. He defeated fourth-seeded Maxime Cressy in the second round to go to the quarterfinals and face seventh-seeded Alexander Bublik. The opening set was won by the Kazakh 6-3, but Wolf battled back to win the next two sets 7-5 and 6-1 and advance to his first season quarterfinal.
Although Ymer possesses excellent defensive skills, recently he has added an offensive element to his games. The Swede’s 60 victories in the Firenze Open vastly exceed his unforced errors (22). He will attempt to exert pressure on Wolf in an effort to get him to commit mistakes on the court.
The American, who can serve rather well, will try to dominate his service games. However, Wolf’s 44 unforced errors during the campaign may work against him given that Ymer has excelled in this area. If Ymer can combine his offensive and defensive strengths while limiting his unforced errors, he should have little trouble making it to his first season final.
