Jignesh Mevani is in news presently because of his arrest by the Assam police. However, Mevani has stated that he is going to carry his work forward. Jignesh Mevaniโs Family And Education
Jignesh’s father worked at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation while his mother worked at the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).
His fatherโs name is Natwarlal Parmar and his mother is Chandraben. He also has a brother named Darshan. While he is unmarried, Jignesh who is an OBC does have a Mulsim girlfriend whose name is not known. Mevani did his schooling at the Swastik Vidyalaya and then the Vishwa Vidyalay Madhaymik Shala based in the Ahmedabad district.
Jignesh started his higher education in the core stream of science, and later dropped out and finished his schooling after switching to humanities. He attained his graduation degree in 2003 with getting a degree in Bachelor of Arts in English literature from the HK Arts College. His college was affiliated with Gujarat University. He did his LLB from the D.T. Law College, Ahemdabad.ย
He is a part of the Una Dalit Atyachar Ladat Samiti which is a supporter of the Congress.
Jignesh Mevani Professional Career
In 2004, Jignesh Mevani moved to Mumbai and became a professional journalist with the Gujarati language news magazine named Abhiyaan. Jignesh worked at the magazine for around three years before quitting journalism to become an activist.
Mevani also briefly worked for a Gujarati language daily newspaper during this period. Later he began his activism by trade unions and returned to the state of Gujarat in 2008. Jignesh worked with the RTI activist Mr. Bharatsinh Zala with whom he visited numerous places to study the causes and issues leading to the farmers’ suicides.
Mevani then joined the civil rights organization which was owned by Mukul Sinha, called Jan Sangharsh Manch (JSM).In order to combat all the issues of discrimination against the Dalits, he grew and raised associations with activists such as Manjula Pradeep and Martin Macwan of the Navsarjan Trust and the Dalit Shakti Kendra.
As an activist, on 30th November 2017, it was declared that Mevani would contest the Gujarat Legislative Assembly election as a prospective independent candidate in the Vadgam constituency.
At present, Jignesh Mevani is the convener of the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch which is also known as the State Dalit Rights Platform. This platform helped him in identifying himself as a social liberal and Ambedkarite.
