Prediction

On Friday at the 2022 Guadalajara Open, Jessica Pegula and Sloane Stephens will square off in the quarterfinals.

Defeating the current Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the second round required Pegula to save three set points. In the third round, she faced Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion. As she went up a break to lead 2-0 in the first set, Andreescu was the first to score. To instantly tie the score, Pegula fought back.

To go up 4-3 in the seventh game, the American secured a break of serve. She then held serve to increase her advantage to 5-3. While serving to stay in the set, Andreescu prevented four set points and eventually held her serve. Pegula easily served out the set in the following game. She again raced out to an early 5-1 lead in the second set, but she struggled to hold on for the victory.

Pegula won the match 6-4, 6-4 on her second attempt after Andreescu won three straight games to make the score 5-4.

On the other hand, after defeating Linda Fruhvirtova and Belinda Bencic, Sloane Stephens went to the third round where she contended against World No. 10 Caroline Garcia. Stephens, who had gone behind 4-1 in the first set, was able to regain serve when her opponent was unable to take the set at 5-3. After the tie-break, Garcia swiftly established a 5-0 advantage.

Stephens persisted and surprisingly altered the tide of the match by winning eight of the next nine points to take the set. The American kept her lead as she quickly raced to a 3-0 advantage in the second set. Garcia earned a serve break to bring the game to 4-4. Stephens broke her opponent’s serve in the 12th game to win the set 7-6(6), 7-5, even though it seemed as though it might go to a tie-break.

Pegula proved to be too powerful for Andreescu to defeat in the previous round. The American rarely tries to do too much with her shots, which makes it challenging to analyse her consistency. Stephens had previously been easily defeated by her, but this week it seems like she’s on a run.

Stephens appears to like the city of Guadalajara and looks to enjoy even though her consistency over the past year, Pegula is likely to triumph against her compassion even though this matchup might be more competitive than their previous ones.
