Head To Head: 1-0

Pegula is ahead 1-0 in the head-to-head matchup. She won in straight sets over them at the 2022 Madrid Open.

Prediction

The 2019 US Open winner Bianca Andreescu will compete against world No. 5 Jessica Pegula in the third round of the 2022 Guadalajara Open on Thursday.

After being given a bye in the first round, Pegula played current Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. The American started slowly and quickly fell down 4-0. She was unable to make up for this gap, and as a result, she lost the first set. Rybakina broke her opponent’s serve to start the second set, but Pegula didn’t let herself go out to a big lead this time and rallied to square the match. The American grabbed the upper hand and led 4-2 in the sixth game. She was effectively given the set as a result, and she promptly and skillfully served it out to make the decider.

Pegula led 2-0 in the third set until Rybakina came back to serve down the line. The set was decided after a tie-break when the current Wimbledon champion had three match points. The American, though, displayed iron grit and turned the tables on her rival to win 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. (8).

On the other hand, Bianca Andreescu won her first-round match against Jil Teichmann 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the second round and face Petra Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion. The first set featured strong tennis from both teams, but a close fourth game gave the Czech Republic a break and a 3-1 lead. Andreescu fought back to draw the game at 3-2, but Kvitova regained control to lead 4-2. The Czech won the set by holding onto the lead the entire time. The former US Open champion jumped off to a quick 5-1 lead in the second set but struggled as she attempted to serve it out after losing her service.

To take the set, Andreescu once more broke Kvitova’s serve. After winning six straight games, the Canadian took the match 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the third and final set.

Andreescu’s top-spin strokes might put Pegula on the back foot on this surface with strong bounce. However, the Canadian is known for playing three-set matches quite frequently. She occasionally has to make a comeback, and other times she falls behind before regaining the lead.

In their previous meeting, which took place earlier this year, Pegula ensued victorious. While there was considerable competition in the first set, the second was mostly one-sided. Due to her relatively consistent shot choices and results this season, the American ought to still have enough left in the tank to overcome Andreescu.
