Jerry West was a former NBA player and executive who was born on May 28, 1938 in Chelyan, West Virginia, U.S. The 86-year-old stood 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) tall. 

A look at Jerry West’s iconic career 

Over the course of his illustrious career as a player and executive, Jerry West was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame three times. Initially, he played as a small forward and then performed as a point guard. 

He was a 14-time All-Star, a 12-time All-NBA pick, the 1969 NBA Finals MVP while playing for a losing team, and a member of the NBA’s 75th anniversary team.

West competed with the Los Angeles Lakers, in nine NBA Finals, and in 1972, he won the championship with the franchise. He was also named an NBA All-Star in each of his 14 seasons as a player.

The icon was the third player in league history to reach 25,000 points before retiring on 25,192 after Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson.

He was dubbed “Mr. Clutch” for his ability to deliver late in a game, and he was a member of the American squad that took home the gold medal from the 1960 Rome Olympics. 

Following his retirement from professional basketball in 1974, the American became a coach and headed the Lakers for three seasons.

Following his stint in the NBA, West worked as an executive and is recognized for helping to create the Showtime Lakers of the 1980s, a franchise that won five titles in a decade.

West enjoyed executive positions with the Memphis Grizzlies, Los Angeles Clippers, and Golden State Warriors after his tenure with the Lakers ended in 2000. 

He got his only NBA title in the Lakers’ record-setting 1971-72 season.

West, the Lakers legend earned several monikers during his playing career including “Mr. Clutch”, “The Logo”, “Zeke from Cabin Creek”? and “Tweety Bird”.

Jerry West was married to his college sweetheart Martha Jane Kane. The two were together from 1960 until they called it off in 1976. They welcomed three kids together, all sons named David, Mark, and Michael. 

He then tried to tie the knot with Kristine “Karen” Bua in 1978 welcoming two sons together named Ryan and Jonnie.

Jerry West passed away on June 12, 2024 in Los Angeles, California, U.S. The cause of death is not known.
