Jerry Buss, the name is very familiar for those who belong to not just basketball but sports fraternity and the reason is that he was the majority owner of NBA’s one of the most popular, valuable and winning team Los Angeles Lakers with 17 NBA Championships, the most in history. He was also a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame because of his contributions to basketball, having already owned other professional sports franchises in Southern California.

Gerald Hatten Buss was a businessman, investor, chemist and philanthropist from America popularly known for his ownership of the NBA team Los Angeles Lakers. The HBO show Winning Time stars John C. Reilly as the late Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss, a flamboyant self-made millionaire who was a chemist and real-estate mogul before becoming the architect of the Showtime Lakers, as the team was commonly called.

Jerry Buss was born on 1933, January 27 in Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S. and died at the age of 80 in the year 2013 on February 18 in Los Angeles, California, U.S.

Buss has 6 children including Johnny Hatten Buss, who is part-owner and vice president of strategic development of the Lakers. Jim Hatten Buss, a part-owner and former executive vice president of basketball operations of the Lakers and Jeanie Buss is the controlling owner and president of the popular basketball team.

Jerry Buss Relationships And Wife

Buss got married to JoAnn Mueller but it didn’t work and they got divorced in 1972. The couple has four children namely Johnny, Jim, Jeanie and Janie.

Having six children, two of them came from girlfriend Karen Demel. The kids named Joey and Jesse also worked in the Lakers organisation along with the ones with his ex-wife.

Jerry Buss Death

Buss was forced to stay hospitalised for many months following an undisclosed intestinal difficulty in the year 2012, a year before his death. Dour days before he died, it was disclosed that Buss had been fighting cancer since 2012. He was hospitalised at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center due to an unknown form of cancer where he died aged 80, of Kidney failure in 2013.

He was buried on February 22 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills).

After his death, his 66% controlling ownership of the LA Lakers was approved to his six children where each of them received an equal vote of 11%.

Buss started with a chemist for the Bureau of Mines. He also worked as an investor and invested in real estate where he was highly successful after which, he with his long time business partner Frank Mariani formed a company of real estate investment named Mariani-Buss Associates. 

Buss in 1979 bought Pickford, the Beverly Hills estate which he sold in 1987. He also was a producer of the movie Black Eye in 1974 as well as owned the Phoenix locations of the Playboy Club.

Buss started with owning a professional tennis league World Team Tennis (WTT) team named Los Angeles Strings followed by his ownership of the basketball team that has won the most NBA Championships counting to 17, Los Angeles Lakers. He also owned a team of National Hockey League (NHL) named Los Angeles Kings and a multi-purpose indoor arena in Inglewood, California named The Forum. All of the three combined was then recorded for $67.5 million. He, in 1996 took charge of operating the Los Angeles Sparks, a franchise of the league Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA)

Jerry Buss, a professional poker player, philanthropist, investor and owner of the major league team. Saving money from his first job out of USC, he purchased a 14-unit rental apartment in West Los Angeles for a $6,000 down payment and $100,000 bank loan. This turned into a $350 million real state empire 18 years later. The Lakers are one of the most valuable sports franchises worth upwards of $5.5 billion.

He had an estimated net worth of $600 million in 2021.
