The show briefly mentions Jeffrey Dahmer’s experience in the Army in episode 4. Indicating that he was released after only a few years of service. But why was Jeffrey Dahmer sent out of the Army?
JEFFREY DAHMER – WHEN DID HE ENTER THE ARMY?
When Jeffrey Dahmer left Ohio State University a few months earlier, he enlisted in the US Army in January 1979.
He enrolled at Ohio State University with the intention of majoring in business after graduating from high school in May 1978, but he left school after just three months because of his alcohol abuse, which caused him to receive poor marks.
Dahmer joined the US Army in January 1979 and received combat medic training at Fort Sam Houston in Texas at his father’s suggestion.
In July 1979, Dahmer was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 68th Armored Regiment of the 8th Infantry Division and sent to Baumholder, West Germany.
However, Dahmer was released from the Army in March 1981 after only two years of service.
WHAT MADE JEFFREY DAHMER LEAVE THE ARMY?
Dahmer’s alcohol problem led to his discharge from the service.
According to accounts of Dahmer’s tenure in the Army, he was a “average or slightly above average” soldier during his first year of duty.
But less than two years after joining the Army, in March 1981, Dahmer’s continued alcohol consumption was determined to make him unfit for military service, and he was released.
Dahmer was given an honourable discharge because his commanders did not think that his issues in the Army would affect his civilian life.
JEFFREY DAHMER’S LIFE AFTER ACTIVE DUTY
Dahmer relocated to Miami, Florida, after receiving his Army discharge, where he worked as a delicatessen employee.
However, by September 1981, Dahmer had been kicked out of the motel room he had been renting due to non-payment. He then called his father and begged to go back to Ohio.
In the years that followed, Dahmer held a number of occupations. He was employed as a phlebotomist—someone who draws blood from patients. At the Milwaukee Blood Plasma Center for 10 months before losing his position. In 1985, the Milwaukee Ambrosia Chocolate Factory employed Dahmer as a mixer.
Steven Tuomi was killed by Dahmer in 1987, the second of his 17 murders and the first of 15 that he would commit in only five years.
Jeffrey Dahmer was imprisoned at Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin, after being apprehended by authorities in 1991. Christopher Scarver, a fellow prisoner, beat Dahmer to death on November 28, 1994.
