Wayne Shorter’s career lasted for more than 50 years, and its growth was closely tied to that of modern jazz. In the late 1950s, he became famous as a tenor saxophonist with two of jazz’s most famous small groups, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and the Miles Davis Quintet. Some of his songs, like “E.S.P.” and “Nefertiti,” have become jazz standards.

His net worth stood at $17 million.

In the 1960s, Shorter helped start a jazz fusion group called Weather Report. He then led his band on more than 20 albums.

Their album Heavy Weather from 1977 is one of the most popular jazz albums of all time. Wayne Shorter’s music is known all over the world, and he has won 12 Grammys for it. He was also given the Polar Music Prize in 2017.

No challenges stopped Wayne Shorter from creating music

Even though he had health problems, Wayne Shorter kept writing music, and he stopped performing in 2018. Shorter composed a “new operatic work,” and Esperanza Spalding wrote the words. Frank Gehry made the sets. Also some of Shorter’s pieces, like the rousing anthem “Black Nile” and the cool, ethereal waltz “Footprints,” became jazz standards.

In addition to his collection of songs, Shorter was admired for making a modern harmonic language and improving it over time. People think that his smooth, seductive compositions can elegantly show different moods.

In 1961, he met Teruko (Irene) Nakagami, whom he later married and with whom he had a daughter named Miyako however, the couple’s marriage ended in 1964.

In 1966, Shorter began a relationship with Ana Maria Patricio, whom he later married in 1970 and the couple experienced a devastating loss when their daughter, Iska, died of a grand mal seizure at the age of 14 in 1986. On July 17, 1996, Ana Maria and the couple’s niece, Dalila, were killed in the crash of TWA Flight 800 and in 1999, Shorter remarried, this time to Carolina Dos Santos, a close friend of Ana Maria.

People outside of jazz have also sent their condolences. Herbie Hancock, a jazz pianist and composer, wrote on Twitter: “Wayne Shorter’s influence on the world of music is unparalleled. His creativity, intelligence, and spirit are woven into the fabric of jazz, and his artistry has inspired countless others. His impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.”

Wayne Shorter’s music will live on as a reminder of his legacy and of what he brought to modern jazz that no one else did.
