On April 2, his management company confirmed the news and said that cancer was the cause of his death. Sakamoto had been fighting the illness for a long time.
Sakamoto first married in 1972 but ended in divorce two years later and had a daughter from this relationship. In 1982, Sakamoto married Japanese pianist and singer Akiko Yano, following several musical collaborations with her. After 14 years of living separately, the couple divorced in August 2006 and they had one daughter Miu Sakamoto, who is a J-pop singer. Since 1990, Sakamoto lived with his wife and manager Norika Sora and the musician has two children with Sora.
His net worth stood at $5 million.
Ryuichi Sakamoto was born in Tokyo in 1952. When he was six, he started taking piano lessons, and later, in college, he studied music composition. In the 1970s, he helped start the band Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO), which was very popular in both the US and Japan. Sakamoto also had a solo career and put out several albums, including Thousand Knives (1978), Esperanto (1985), and Neo Geo (1996). (1987).

Sakamoto gained prominence for composing music for movie scores. He wrote the music for the movies The Little Buddha, Snake Eyes, and Femme Fatale, among others. In 1987, for his work on Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, he won the Academy Award, the Golden Globe, and the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture.
Ryuichi Sakamoto has been told twice in recent years that he has cancer. He had throat cancer in 2014 and stopped making music for a year. In 2021, doctors diagnosed him with bowel cancer, yet he continued making music during his treatment.

Sakamoto’s management company also put out a statement thanking both his fans and the doctors who worked to help him get better. They shared one of Sakamoto’s favorite quotes: “Ars longa, vita brevis.” Art is long, life is short.
