Japanese Jockey Taiki Yanagida Dies Following Tragic Horse Racing Accident
Following the accident, Taiki was put into an induced coma due to injuries to his brain and spinal cord. Taiki never regained consciousness.
The horrifying accident took place in the last race at the Cambridge Jockey Club last Wednesday. Yanagida was riding his maiden horse, Te Atatu Pash, during the incident. He fell off his horse after reaching just about 250 metres from the starting post.
Taiki lost his helmet during the fall, getting trampled by his own horse, and then by another one close behind. He was struck severely in the back by the two horses and was swiftly taken to the Waikato Hospital. There, the doctors put him under an induced coma.
Following the tragic incident, Taiki’s mother, Kayano, and sister, Chiaki, flew from Japan last Thursday to be with him. However, the jockey could not recover from his injuries and died on August 9.
Yanagida is the first jockey to die in a race in New Zealand since Rebecca Black at Gore in December 2016.
