The Kanagawa Arts Foundation, where he was the general creative director, delivered the sad news of his passing. In a statement, the head of the foundation, Kazumi Tamamura, said,

Who Was Toshi Ichiyanagi?
Toshi Ichiyanagi was a renowned Japanese avant-garde pianist and composer. He has been in the news because he died recently.
On February 4th, 1933, he was born in Kobe, Imperial Japan. He comes from a musical family.
He lived in New York City from 1954 to 1960, when he attended the Juilliard School and the New School for Social Research. John Cage, Kishio Hirao, and Tomojirō Ikenouchi were some of his composing teachers.
From 1956 to 1962, he was married to Yoko Ono. The marriage fell apart when he decided to go back to Japan while Ono stayed in New York. Since then, he made the decision to live a single life.
On October 7, 2022, he passed away at the age of 89.
His Career
Toshi Ichiyanagi displayed an early interest in composition. Then he began to emerge as a young composer who incorporated parts of electronic and traditional Japanese music into his free-spirited compositions.
When he returned to Japan in 1960, he worked with the Neo-Dada Organizers’ anti-art group. The compositions “Kaiki” from 1960, “Distance” from 1961, and “Anima 7” from 1964, are some of his most noteworthy early works.
Along with six other composers, he co-founded the avant-garde music collective known as New Direction in 1963. When the majority of the group’s members moved to New York in the late 1960s, Ichiyanagi stayed in Japan, and the group broke apart.
