Prediction
Two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner will take on fifth seed Holger Rune in the Sofia Open semifinal on Saturday.
Sinner defeated Nuno Borges in straight sets to get to the quarterfinals, where he met Aleksandar Vukic. The Italian had to fend off four break points in the first game of the match to keep his serve. He would ultimately face no more difficulties in the first set as he went on to win the match by winning four straight games.
Sinner broke and quickly jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first few strokes of the second set, but Vukic fought back to get back on serve. The 21-year-old defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-3 by serving out the match after breaking his opponent’s serve once more.
Rune advanced to the quarterfinals in Sofia by defeating Lorenzo Sonego in three sets after defeating Tim van Rijthoven in straight sets. He had to defeat Ilya Ivashka in order to move on to the semifinals.
Rune quickly won the first set, needing just five straight games to take the match. The second set appeared to be heading for a tie-break, but Ivashka saved two break points towards the set’s end—his first of the entire match. The Belarusian was successful in breaking his rival’s serve to win the set and demand a deciding.
In the decisive set, Rune quickly took command by leading 3-1, but Ivashka won the following three games to retake the serve. The teen’s thigh issue was now starting to bother him and was beginning to affect his performance. The match ended with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory for him when he managed to break the opponent in the ninth game of the set.
Rune’s health will be the top concern during this battle. Despite not seeming to be in great shape toward the conclusion of their quarterfinal encounter, the Dane managed to defeat Ivashka.
Rune’s serving statistics at the start of the game were respectable, and he was still able to finish the match with more winners than unforced errors. On the other side in Sofia, Sinner seemed unbeatable. The young Dane will need to be at the top of his game to even make it a meaningful match since the defending champion seems to be in bad shape.
Sinner’s game is significantly more intense because of the inside setting. Rune seems to have settled into his routine after a challenging few months. However, he can’t defeat the Italian right now since he’s too strong and dependable, so he should be able to keep defending his title.
