The Italian was injured after a scuffle and will be examined in the coming hours because of an ankle problem.
The blue attempted to rejoin the game after receiving bandages, but they were unable to establish themselves on the field. The talented 21-year-old should play in Astana the following week as well, which will definitely worry Italian supporters. Meanwhile, Rune advanced to his second ATP Tour final of 2022 on Saturday at the Sofia Open when fellow #NextGenATP star Sinner withdrew from their matchup due to an ankle injury.
When Sinner had to quit against Rune at the ATP 250 tournament in Bulgaria, Rune had a 5-7, 6-4, 5-2 lead. The Italian, who was attempting to win his third consecutive match in Sofia, injured his ankle in a violent fall when Rune led 3-2, 0/15 in the third set. The Italian opponent was Rune’s first opponent at tour-level, and Rune battled valiantly to turn the match around after losing the first set.
Huesler had previously pulled off an incredible comeback to defeat fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(5), 7-5, and advance to his first ATP Tour final in the indoor hard-court competition.
The Swiss lefty displayed a tonne of powerful serving and decisive volleying en route to a 96-minute semi-final victory against Musetti, reeling off six games in a row from 1/5 to win the first set tie-break. In the second set tie-break of Friday’s quarterfinal encounter against Kamil Majchrzak, the 26-year-old had saved two match points.
In their first ATP Head2Head meeting, Huesler prevailed with his eighth tour-level victory of the year despite Musetti hitting 29 winners to only 24 for Huesler.
Due to his success this past week in Sofia, Huesler rose 21 spots to No. 74 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings.
