James Trafford club career

James initially started out at local football league side, Carlisle United before joining Manchester City’s Etihad campus academy aged 12. He was then sent out on loan to Accrington Stanley in 2021 where he experienced the brutal style of play in League One firsthand. At 18 years old, which is still considered in the very early stages for a goalkeeper, Trafford made 11 appearances for Accrington during the first half of the 21-22 season. He maintained clean sheets in seven of his 22 appearances. Trafford experienced his real breakthrough in the 2022-23 campaign, missing out only on one of the 48 league games. He kept an exceptional 22 clean sheets or once every 2.2 games. He also secured a silverware in the form of Bolton’s EFL Trophy. Trafford registered the second most number of clean sheets in League One last term helping his side enter the playoffs.

International career

James Trafford also made his presence known in the international level where he represented England at every age group starting from the under-17s upwards. His best performances came in the while playing for England’s under-21 at the Euros.

The 20-year-old played every second of their 570-minute campaign, without conceding a single goal in six matches. He even made a heroic penalty save during extra time to maintain his side’s one-goal buffer during the final.
