James Piszcyk wheel-perfect in British F4 opener at Silverstone

James Piszcyk became the first repeat winner of the 2025 Wera Tools F4 British Championship certified by FIA season today (May 2) after producing an exemplary performance at Silverstone

The Rodin Motorsport driver enjoyed a flawless Friday at the Home of British Motor Racing as he followed up a record-breaking performance in qualifying by clinching a peerless lights-to-flag victory; snaring the fastest lap of the race for good measure.

Completing two practice sessions around the 3.660-mile Grand Prix circuit on Thursday, the UK’s premier single-seater series upped the ante in the searing conditions on Friday with Piszcyk securing the C1RCUIT Watches Pole Position Award in impressive fashion.

Bettering his own lap record – which he set in 2023 – by more than half a second, the Donington Park race winner ultimately edged out Ethan Jeff-Hall (Argenti Motorsport) by just 0.058s – although the latter would start further back after incurring a grid penalty from the previous round.

With the Mercedes F1 Junior therefore lining up slightly down the order, a number of Round 1 front runners from last weekend including Martin Molnár (Virtuosi Racing), Fionn McLaughlin (Hitech TGR) and August Raber (Argenti Motorsport) benefitted by moving up a position.

As the lights went out for race one, Piszcyk wasted no time in utilising his front-row start as he led the field through the opening sequence of corners. It would however be short-lived as the safety car soon made an appearance.

After a solitary lap the action resumed and all eyes were fixed towards the front as McLaughlin, who had moved up to second on the opening lap, began to become a looming presence in the mirrors of race leader Piszcyk.

Further down the order, championship leader Tommy Harfield (Chris Dittmann Racing) and Leo Robinson (Hitech TGR) found themselves in strife on the restart and both plummeted towards the back of the field; with neither of them ultimately seeing the chequered flag.

Reaping the benefits of having a clear road ahead of him, Piszcyk soon began to establish an advantage over McLaughlin; however the gap never extended to more than a second.

Despite a second safety car period neutralising the field and setting up a two-lap dash to the finish, Piszcyk held firm to beat McLaughlin to tally his second successive win of the campaign.

Behind the top two, the trio of last year’s Rookie Cup winner Molnár, Henry Joslyn (Fortec Motorsport) and Raber ran line astern to complete the top-five; the latter benefitting from misfortune that Rowan Campbell-Pilling (JHR Developments) suffered late on.

Thomas Bearman (Hitech TGR) recorded his second points finish of the season in sixth while Jeff-Hall, Henry Mercier (Argenti Motorsport), Yuhao Fu (Xcel Motorsport) and Cole Hewetson (Xcel Motorsport) completed the top ten.

Esmee Kosterman (JHR Developments) notably capped off a memorable maiden outing in British F4 by going from the back of the grid to 11th place. Further back, Charlie Edge (Chris Dittmann Racing) was the winner of the Challenge Cup.

Races two and three of the Wera Tools F4 British Championship certified by FIA at Silverstone are scheduled to take place at 10:50 and 15:35 respectively on Saturday.

Both contests will be streamed LIVE on the championship’s YouTube channel.
