Jagmohan Malhotra was a professional Indian civil servant and also a popular politician. After serving at the Indian National Congress, Jagmohan joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and he worked as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and Goa. He was the 5th Governor of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and for three terms, a Member of Parliament in New Delhi. In the cabinet, he worked as the Union Minister for Urban Development and Tourism.
Jagmohan Malhotra’s father was Amir Chand whereas his mother’s name was Dropadi Devi. He was married to Uma Jagmohan. He had two children, a daughter Deepika Kapoor and a son named Manmohan Malhotra. He was the governor of Jammu and Kashmir when Muslims carried out the biggest exodus in India till date leading to the ethnic cleaning of Kashmiri Pandits, a period which saw Jagmohan required to preside over his most difficult reign till date.
He was the governor of the state twice, from April 26, 1984, to July 11, 1989, and then from January 19, 1990, to May 26, 1990 with him often voicing his disdain at Article 370 and how it hindered development in the land. He has been hailed by Kashmiri Pandits for securing their safe passage out of Kashmir during the genocide.
G C Saxena replaced him as the governor with Jagmohan eventually shifting to the BJP from the Congress owing to his school of thought during his time in New Delhi.

Jagmohan Malhotra initially earned fame during his stint as vice-chairman of the capital Delhi Development Authority in the 1970s. During this time Jagmohan Malhotra raised close to Sanjay Gandhi, who started to wield increasing clout in the functioning of his mother Prime Minister during the time of Indira Gandhi’s government.
During the Emergency of 1975–77, Sanjay Gandhi entrusted Mr. Jagmohan with the “beautification” of Delhi, a task that was related to the large-scale demolition of slums. Malhotra was honored with the Padma Shri award in 1971. He also contested for the seat from New Delhi in the Lok Sabha in 1996 for the 11th Lok Sabha.
Jagmohan defeated Bollywood star Rajesh Khanna by a massive vote difference of 58,000 votes. In 1998 and in the year 1999, Malhotra gained the seat again defeating R K Dhawan of the Indian National Congress back to back. In 2004, he lost to Mr. Ajay Maken of the Indian National Congress by a difference of 12,784 votes.
