The upcoming event is all set to take place in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia starting from 4-17 September.
Paris 2024 qualifications quotas
Athletes who wish to compete in next year’s Paris 2024 must appear in the upcoming competition in Riyadh to earn a one of the 10 quota spots across each of the 10 Olympic weight classes. This qualification will be based on the IWF Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR). Aside from those 10 quotas, a National Olympic Committee (NOC) from a continent not already represented will earn a spot. NOCs are allowed to send only three lifters per gender for each weight class to Paris.
On the other hand, next year’s hosts, France have four guaranteed quota berths – two men and two women. Moreover, they can obtain two more spots through the OQR. Aside from those, there are six more spots – three men and three women – reserved as Universality places. These spots are meant for NOCs who would generally have little or no chance of representation at the Games. As such, there are a total of 120 spot available in total. Furthermore, NOCs have the exclusive authority for choosing which athletes will participate at the Paris Games.
IWF World Weightlifting Championships 2023 format
Usually, athletes are awarded medals based on the total weight lifted in the Olympic Games. Athletes win separate medals for the snatch, clean and jerk, and total weight. However, the upcoming competition will feature a total of 20 weight classes, 10 per gender.
