The event is expected to bring in over 260 skaters from across 35 countries for three days of intense action.
ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships 2023 preview
The ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships 2023 will be the last event of the short track season. The world’s best skaters will all converge upon Seoul for the season’s climax. Choi Min-Jeong and Park Ji-won will spearhead the hosts contingent at the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships.
Both the women’s and men’s competition will feature the 500m, 1000m, and 1500m relays. Moreover, the women will compete in the 3000m relay race, while the men will compete in the 5000m relays.
World Short Track Speed Skating Championships dates and venue
The Republic of Korea will host the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships 2023 from 10 to 12 March. South Korea are one of the leading nations in the sport, and will host the event originally scheduled to take place back in March 2020.
Much to the disappointment of the fans and participants, the event was postponed in 202, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2023 championship will be the fourth time that the country has hosted the short track skating’s premier event. The Republic of Korea previously hosted the event in 2001, 2008, and 2016.
World Short Track Speed Skating Championships 2023 stars to watch
Given below is a list of the players to watch out for during the upcoming competition:
Choi Min-Jeong (Republic of Korea)
Choi is the defending overall world champion dubbed as the queen of Korean short track. She had a low-key World Cup campaign where she won only one individual victory. She won the 1500m event at the Dresden’s leg earlier in February.
Park Ji Won (Republic of Korea)
Park Ji Won is the newly crowned inaugural winner of the World Cup Crystal Globe Trophy. He will be looking to build on his superb form in the men’s competition in the upcoming event. Park has so far won both the 1000m and 1500m this season.
Suzanne Schulting (Netherlands)
Suzanne Schulting is a Dutch short track legend who won gold at the 1000m and 3000m relay back in the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. She also won the inaugural Crystal Globe trophy in the women’s category.
Schulting is a two-time world champion and won four gold medals throughout her World Cup campaign. She topped the podium twice in the 1500m out of those four gold medal wins.
Kim Gilli (Republic of Korea)
Kim Gilli was the top female competitor in the women’s 1500m.
Xandra Velzeboer (Netherlands)
Xandra Velzeboer is a Dutch runner who and the reigning world champion who finished the World Cup season with a top spot in the sprint distance standings.
Denis Nikisha (Kazakhstan)
Denis Nikisha of Kazakhstan topped the sprint event in the men’s category and he will be looking to win the world title in the 500m event.
