  • Purslow’s second TT appearance was in 2022.

  • After Chanal’s death, the first Sidecar race was cancelled.

On June 1, Mark Purslow was killed in a qualifying accident. The 29-year-old was a seasoned classic racer, having competed in the Classic TT three times between 2016 and 2019. At the 2015 Manx Grand Prix, he made his debut on the TT Mountain Course, winning the Lightweight Race. In 2017, he moved up to the Isle of Man TT Races, where he competed in the Supersport and Lightweight classes, and 2022 marked his second TT appearance.

Due to a tragic incident at Ago’s Leap involving French firm Shock Factory’s driver Cesar Chanal and passenger Olivier Lavorel, the opening Sidecar race on Saturday (June 4) was red-flagged and then cancelled.

Organizers initially stated that Lavorel was killed in the incident; however, over four days later, a clarification was given, explaining that Chanal was the one who died, while Lavorel remains critically ill in hospital. “The injured contestant was treated on the side of the road before being taken to Noble’s Facility and then flown to a specialised hospital in Liverpool for treatment.” The statement added, “An initial identification procedure was done using established procedures and appears to have resulted in an erroneous identification.”

Davy Morgan, 52, was the event’s third fatality this year. On the penultimate lap of the first Supersport event, he was killed in an accident. Morgan was a seasoned TT competitor who had competed in every edition since his debut in 2002. His 80th TT start was the race in which he unfortunately died. He’d raced in hundreds of events, including the Manx Grand Prix, Classic TT, Southern 100, North West 200, Macau Grand Prix, and Irish national races, winning countless podiums and races.

The SportsGrail sends its profound sympathies to the families, friends, and teams of the three riders.
