ISL 2022-23 playoffs, semi-final and final format and rules explained

For the first time in the history of the league, six teams have the opportunity to advance through the league stage and stake a claim to the ISL title.

Teams like Kerala Blasters, ATK Mohun Bagan, FC Goa, Odisha FC, Bengaluru FC, and Chennaiyin FC are contending for one of the four available spots.

Kerala Blasters defeated Chennaiyin FC 2-1 in their Indian Super League (ISL) match on Tuesday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to advance to the playoffs.

The victory, the Blasters’ sixth at home in nine games this year, helped them move up to the third position.

Chennaiyin’s chances of making the playoffs are all but gone, but the Yellow Brigade has 31 points after 17 games. It was too difficult for Chennai to achieve their goal of winning every game while Bengaluru’s current comeback to form indicates that the competition is intense.

ISL 2022-23 new format

The format for the ISL 2022–23 season has changed from previous seasons when the top four teams from the league stage advanced to the two-legged semi-finals.

The top two teams will advance automatically to the semifinals, and the teams who placed third through sixth in the ISL 2022–23 points standings will compete in single-leg knockout matches to determine the other two semifinalists.
