Recently, a video of Pope Francis went viral, in which he was seen enjoying a circus performance in Vatican City. The video showcases Pope Francis surrounded by performers.
On October 4, 2023, @EndWokeness, a Twitter user, posted a video with the caption, “The Vatican is no more.” More than 7.4 million people have watched the video, and it has had 11.5k plus shares so far.
Is The Viral Video Of Pope Francis True Or Fake?
While the video is genuine, a closer look showed that it was actually an old clip from 2020 of the Aqua Circus performing for Pope Francis at his General audience at the Paul VI Hall, a structure in Vatican City.
The group’s performance was centred on protecting the environment, portraying a tale of a mermaid and a man battling to clean up the ocean from pollution. Pope Francis took part in the performance by throwing a hoop at an acrobat at one point in the performance.
The Viral Video Caused A Stir Back In 2020
Many people charged Pope Francis with taking in and enjoying such a performance when the video first surfaced in 2020, calling it sinful. Such criticism was quickly criticised, however, for instigating hatred against the Pope because he enjoyed the circus.
The Viral Video Leaves Netizens Outraged Now
Internet users were surprised when an old video of a circus performance at the Vatican went viral and promptly started venting their rage online. Many people referred to it as weird and an abomination, while others found it upsetting and disrespectful of social norms.
When Pope St. Paul VI founded the Pontifical Commission on the Spiritual Care of Migrants and Itinerants, it became a yearly custom to invite circus performers to perform for the general public, according to Patheos.com. As part of its responsibilities, the office provided ministry to exiles, sailors, pilots, nomads, refugees, and travelling circus performers.
However, numerous popes have welcomed circus performers for the papal audience. It included Pope John XXIII in 1959, who did so in honour of the Orfei-Venturi Circus, and Pope Leo XIII in the 1890s, who did so in honour of the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show.
