Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal has long remained one of Saudi Arabia’s most poignant figures, widely known as the kingdom’s “Sleeping Prince.” After suffering a traumatic brain injury in a car accident in 2005 while studying at a military college in the United Kingdom, he has remained in a coma for nearly two decades. Despite the passage of time, his condition has shown only minimal improvement, with the prince still reliant on a ventilator and feeding tube.
He had been placed on life support at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh following the accident, where he has continued to receive round-the-clock care. Reports from 2019 mentioned that his family had noticed faint signs of responsiveness and subtle movements such as raising a finger or tilting his head but, no significant recovery had followed. As of April 18, 2025, he had turned 36 years old, still in a coma that had defined much of his young life.
Shortly after his recent birthday, a video began circulating on social media, sparking speculation that the prince had regained consciousness. The footage showed a man receiving a warm welcome from his family, prompting widespread claims that the “Sleeping Prince” had awakened. However, the video did not feature Prince Al-Waleed. It actually showed Saudi businessman and rally driver Yazeed Mohamed Al-Rajhi, who had recently recovered from injuries sustained during the Baja Jordan rally.

Al-Rajhi had reportedly suffered spinal fractures in the accident and had undergone hospital treatment. While videos of his recovery had been shared online, one of them was incorrectly attributed to Prince Al-Waleed. Although the image used in the viral post depicted the prince, the video and its accompanying claims were unrelated and inaccurate.
Despite ongoing medical advice recommending the withdrawal of life support, Prince Al-Waleed’s father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, has remained firm in his decision to preserve his son’s life. He had once stated publicly that if divine will had meant for his son to die in the accident, he would not still be alive. The prince’s mother, Princess Reema, had also spoken of sensing her son’s presence and spirit, offering her own expression of hope.
Prince Al-Waleed belongs to one of the most prominent branches of the Saudi royal family. As the great-grandson of King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, and the grandson of Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, his lineage connected him closely to the kingdom’s ruling elite. King Salman, the current monarch, was his great-uncle. Each year, on his birthday, messages filled social media platforms as citizens and well-wishers continued to pray for his recovery.
