While he had to go through many ups and downs to gain a call-up to the national team, his humble background of selling panipuri on the streets of Mumbai astonished everyone. A couple photos of him standing beside a panipuri vendor also went viral, adding fuel to the flames.
According to several media accounts, Yashasvi Jaiswal used to sell panni-puris alongside his father outside the Azad Maidan, where he resided in a tent.
However, in a recent interview, Jaiswal’s boyhood coach, Jwala Singh, expressed his displeasure with the popular story of the youngster selling panipuri on the streets to earn food. The coach went on to discuss Jaiswal’s cricketing journey and the difficulties he faces due to financial obligations. He also disclosed the reality behind the viral social media images.
Earlier during an interview, Jwala Singh claimed that, “Yashasvi Jaiswal met me in 2013 while staying in Azad Maidan’s tent and didn’t have much financial support.
“Though his father worked very hard to keep the family running, there were certain limits. So, in the Azad Maidan Ground, there would be Pani-Puri trolleys that would turn up and Jaiswal would go in a friendly manner, speak with them and at times sell a few panipuri’s to earn 20-25 rupees,”
He further added: “On social media, a photo and a video went viral which shows Jaiswal standing next to a pani-puri guy claiming that he is his father. In 2018, when he was selected for the U-19’s for the first time, one of the TV channels had approached me, insisting on taking visuals of Jaiswal selling pani-puri. I was disappointed but the channel requested by saying that it is ‘normal’ and took the visuals anyway,”
Jwala Singh went on to say that his family always treated Jaiswal like their ‘own child,’ providing him with all the amenities, but that they were devastated after false stories surfaced on social media.
