Is The Black Phone Movie Based On A True Story? Inspiration, Summary Explained
The famous American filmmaker Scott Derrickson is the director of this movie. The movie begins with a sense of unease for Finney and his friends’ destiny. As they are aware that they may be taken by The Grabber at any time and never seen again. C. Robert Cargill worked on the film adaptation of Hill’s short tale alongside Derrickson. Aside from the news about child abusers, Finney lived in an era where American children were given little independence with no mobile phones to connect them to their families.
IS THE BLACK PHONE BASED ON A TRUE STORY?
No, The Black Phone movie is not inspired by a real incident. However, it is a remake of Joe Hill’s 2004 short story with the same name. It’s one of several stories included in 20th Century Ghosts, the American author’s first book-length work. It first appeared in the UK in 2005 and was later released as a set in the US in 2007.
While the basis of the 2004 short tale is retained in the film, certain sections have been revised and modified. One of the most significant modifications was to The Grabber himself, who was characterized in the novel as an “overweight clown fashioned after John Wayne Gacy.”
“There wasn’t anything I felt conflicted about,” Derrickson said of implementing changes to the plot. “It seemed quite apparent to me what I needed to change. In the novel, he is an obese clown inspired by John Wayne Gacy. Frankly, He didn’t want him to be a clown and did not like the way Ethan was. So He began with the mask and Ethan from blank. He was, hoping to create a style, image, and manner for The Grabber that was independent of Joe’s book.
Derrickson’s quest to take The Black Phone to theatres was also incredibly personal. As the film is a blend of Joe Hill’s story and a replay of sorts of some tragic incidents he faced as a boy.
