The novel was inspired by a relationship from the author’s own life. However, after the novel originally came out, Carola denied that the presence of character Stephen DeMarco is not based on a real person.

However, back in the year 2019, the author wrote an article for The Cut where she detailed her experiences and also confirmed that the story was based on a real relationship.

In a statement Carola said, “I didn’t want to publicly rehash something that had been such a toxic situation in my life.”

She further added, “Writing about my unhealthy relationship had been cathartic; the prospect of discussing it with strangers made me severely uncomfortable.”

Later when she received messages from her readers, she went on to say that, “If I, as the author, can’t empathize with my own readers in the experience I’ve created on the page, how can I hope or expect them to find lasting comfort there?”

She continued, “The problem is that the closer you look at the line between fiction and truth, the blurrier it gets,” she added. “I’ve been so hesitant — and scared — to talk about the “real” Stephen, because while there is certainly a person who inspired his character, that person isn’t actually the character. And that is a distinction I need to keep intact.”
