Rebecca Welch is an English professional football referee who was born on December 1, 1983, in Washington, Tyne and Wear, England. While growing up, she played a lot of football and eventually ended up studying with the Durham County Football Association to become a referee. She is currently 40 years old and has a career where she has achieved a lot of firsts.
Rebecca Welch career
Prior to starting out her career as a full-time football referee, Rebecca also worked as an administrator with the NHS Business Services Authority. She officially became a football referee in 2010, but continued to work in her NHS post up until 2019. Throughout her career, Rebecca has officiated many Womenโs Super League games. She even officiated the Womenโs FA Cup Finals in both the 2017 and 2020 editions.
Rebecca also became the first female referee to officiate an English Football League (EFL) Championship match. It happened after the English Football Association (FA) announced on March 30, 2021, that Welch would serve as the match official for the Harrogate vs. Port Vale match, where Port Vale won 2-0. Moreover, Rebecca was featured on the list of the FIFA Womenโs World Cup officiating pool on January 9, 2023. The tournament took place in Australia and New Zealand.
More recently, the Premier League announced on December 14, 2023, that Welch would officiate a match between Fulham and Burnley. The match will reportedly take place later this month, on December 23, 2023. By serving as the match official, Rebecca will become the first female referee to officiate in the English Premier League.
