Who is David Coote?

Age 42 Coote began his refereeing journey at the age of sixteen, initially officiating in the Notts Alliance League. His career progressed through the Northern Counties East Football League, the Northern Premier League, and Conference North, eventually earning him a promotion to the Football League as an assistant referee. His debut in this role took place during a League Two match between Stockport County and Hereford United.

Originally from Nottinghamshire, Coote officiated in the Football League before advancing to oversee high-profile matches, including the 2023 EFL Cup Final between Manchester United and Newcastle. Although he has officiated some significant fixtures, Coote is more frequently seen in the role of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) rather than on the pitch for Liverpool matches. He is a Notts County supporter.

Coote who is single and unmarried was a part of Premier League referees on a charity trip who posed with party girls on a boozy night out in Indonesia back in 2019. Coote refereed the 2023 EFL Cup final and was paid £48,000 in salary last season.

Referees officiating in the English top flight earn roughly £1,116 per match on top of their annual salary, which can fall between £73,191, £105,257 and £147,258, depending on the experience and quality of the officials.

His role as VAR in the 2020 Merseyside derby drew significant criticism from Klopp, as both Virgil van Dijk and Thiago Alcântara suffered serious injuries in that game. Van Dijk was ruled out for the rest of the season following a reckless challenge by Everton’s Jordan Pickford. In the lead-up to Liverpool’s Champions League match against Ajax after the derby, Klopp expressed his frustration, stating that something unacceptable had happened in football just days prior.
