Carney holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports and Exercise Science from Loughborough University, specializing in Physiology and Sports Psychology, with her dissertation focusing on “The impact of caffeine on repeated sprint performance in elite female football.”

In 2013, she earned a Master of Science in Sports Psychology with a specialization in Performance Psychology from the University of Gloucestershire.

In 2021, she enrolled herself for a Master of Business Administration at the James Lind Institute and graduated in October 2022.

Carney is a vegan and credits her diet with improving both her physical and mental health. Known for her exceptional skill on the field, she was nicknamed “the Wizard.”

Career

Carney’s football career began at Birmingham City, where she was named FA Young Player of the Year in 2005 and 2006.

She then signed with Arsenal, achieving significant success in the 2006–07 season by winning the UEFA Women’s Cup and all three domestic trophies: the FA Women’s Premier League, FA Women’s Cup, and FA Women’s Premier League Cup.

After two seasons with the Chicago Red Stars in the American Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS), Carney returned to Birmingham City from 2011 to 2015.

She concluded her career at Chelsea, where she was named Player of the Year in 2016 and captained the club to an FA Women’s Cup title in the 2017–18 season. Carney retired in July 2019.
