Is It Time For Virat Kohli To Hang Up His Captaincy Shoes After The Torrid WTC Final Defeat

Is It Time For Virat Kohli To Hang Up His Captaincy Shoes After The Torrid WTC Final Defeat

After MS Dhoni announced his retirement midway through India’s 2014/15 tour of Australia, Virat Kohli was given the test captaincy in 2014

While Virat Kohli’s first Test series as captain was a failure, he has gone on to have a stellar captaincy record in the years since.

Virat Kohli has been a successful captain for India in all formats, however as captain, he is yet to win an ICC trophy. Kohli has also failed to win an IPL trophy as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore, despite his India deputy Rohit Sharma’s five victories as the captain of Mumbai Indians. The ICC knockouts and finals cricket is not a one-man’s show and these failures indicate synonymously.

While Kohli and Rohit have toiled in recent ICC elimination matches, Team India has been unable to win an ICC tournament since MS Dhoni’s Champions Trophy title in 2013. They lost in the semi-finals of the 2015 World Cup, the 2016 T20 World Cup, the 2017 Champions Trophy final, and the 2019 World Cup semi-final.

Virat Kohli Captaincy Record In ICC Events

Virat Kohli currently having a stroke of bad luck in the captaincy and low string of score of 44 & 13 vs NZ in WTC ’19-21 Finals, 1 vs NZ in WC 2019 Semi-Finals, 5 vs Pak in CT 2017 Finals in the knockout games, giving room to split captaincy and controversial comments by cricket pundits. Another factory of heavy reliance on the skipper burdens and eventually leads to the downfall of the team.

Averaging above 50 in all the formats, the modern-day legend has scored 7547 runs in Test matches, 12,169 in ODIs, and 3159 runs in T20I. A run machine in every format, but on major stages the Virat appears brittle. The impressive records won’t guide you to trophies based on which success of each player is measured.

BCCI must consider allotting Kohli some free space by reducing the burden off his shoulder. The world cricket might witness a free-floating Virat Kohli away from responsibility, continuing his extravagant game for Team India. The Indian skipper will go down as one of the greatest, he must revamp his strategies and approach along with the coach and team management in order to receive favourable results which he truly deserves.
