In 2010, he joined United Club in the CAB First Division League to pursue his cricketing aspirations more seriously. Though he initially enrolled in a local academy as a frontline batter, coaches noticed his growing frame and encouraged him to switch to fast bowling. His progress led him to work alongside former Bengal pacer Ranadeb Bose under India’s Vision 2020 program. Within a year, he found a spot in Bengal’s Under-23 team. However, a career-threatening back injury halted his momentum.

His T20 debut for Bengal came during the 2018–19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 9 March 2019. Later that year, he made his List A debut in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on 24 September, followed by his first-class debut on 25 December 2019 in the Ranji Trophy.

Before his Test debut, he claimed 11 wickets—including two four-wicket hauls—for India A against England Lions, underlining his readiness for the international stage.

His big break arrived in February 2024, when he was named in India’s Test squad for the last three matches against England. The news reportedly reached him while he was playing for Bengal in the 2023–24 Ranji Trophy season.

In 2025, Akash Deep found himself in the squad for the prestigious Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy against England.
