24-year-old Naomi Girma was born on June 14, 2000. She is 5ft 6in tall. Girma Aweke and Seble Demissie, both Ethiopian immigrants who met in the Bay Area, welcomed Girma into the world in San Jose, California. Nathaniel, her older brother, is three older than her.
Girma played for the Maleda Soccer Club when she was younger. Her father started the club in 2005 to serve the Ethiopian community in the Bay Area. She continued her brother’s athletic career by going to YMCA after-school basketball games and Hacienda Elementary School. Before deciding to play football in middle school, she also spent five years practicing gymnastics.
Naomi Girma was born to parents Girma Aweke and Seble. Both his parents are of Ethiopean heritage, with her father Aweke arriving in the US after escaping the war-struck country. Aweke works as an electrical engineer and founded the Maleda Soccer Club in San Jose alongside his friends. The club is aimed at catering to Ethiopian immigrants and their children.
Notably, even Naomi herself started out her football journey at the club. Meanwhile, her mother migrated to California in order to pursue higher education. Seble reportedly worked as a bank manager before meeting Girma Aweke and marrying him.

After making an impression on coaches at a practice that a friend took her to, Girma joined the local youth team Central Valley Crossfire in 2010 and played there until its disbandment in 2017. Girma, who played under Crossfire coach Bob Joyce, was called up to the U.S. under-14 national team camp and urged to compete in Olympic Development Program competitions.

American professional football player Naomi Haile Girma plays centre back for both the US national team and Chelsea, a team in the Women’s Super League.
Girma captained the Stanford Cardinals to the 2019 national championship while playing collegiate soccer for them. She was chosen first overall by San Diego Wave FC in the 2022 NWSL Draft. She helped lead San Diego win the NWSL Shield in 2023 and was named NWSL Defender of the Year and NWSL Rookie of the Year in both of her first two seasons.
Before making her senior debut in 2022, Girma represented the United States at the under-17, under-19, and under-20 levels. In 2023, she won the title of U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year. She played every minute in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where she won gold with the United States.
