As things stand, the Mumbai Indians have just one game in hand to secure a playoffs qualification spot.
IPL 2023 Playoff Rules
The Indian Premier League IPL 2023 will feature the top four teams from the league stages advance to the playoffs. The top two teams will play the Qualifier 1 match, where the winner will directly advance to the final.
Meanwhile, the third and fourth-placed teams will play an Eliminator match where the loser will crash out of the tournament. The winner of the Eliminator will play against the loser of Qualifier 1 in the Qualifier 2 match. The winner of Qualifier 2 will then enter the Final against the winner from Qualifier 1.
Mumbai Indians IPL 2023 performance
The Mumbai Indians began their IPL 2023 campaign with two consecutive losses against RCB and CSK. However, they managed to secure three major wins over DC, KKR, and SRH. Following which they further lost two matches against PBKS and GT, before winning against RR and PBKS. Their last three matches were two wins over Royal Challengers Bangalore on Tuesday (May 9) and Gujarat Titans on Friday and a defeat against LSG.
Mumbai Indians MI IPL 2023 Playoffs Qualification Scenario
In short, yes, they absolutely can. However, if MI are looking for a top 1 or 2 finish, they need to win their last match and rely on CSK and LSG losing their next game and RCB losing one of their two games.
A win would secure them with 16 points, but if CSK and LSG win their matches and RCB win their final two matches MI will fail to qualify due to an inferior NRR. Meanwhile, if RCB lose both their matches, even a defeat would secure MI a playoffs spot.
