TATA IPL 2025 salary system explained, how and when are players paid, contract details and are players paid if they don’t play
The new IPL season will feature several new changes to their salary system and uphold some of the old. Given below is a rundown of the league’s salary system:
Full salaries even if unavailable
All players available for the full season are entitled to receive their full salary, regardless of how many matches they get selected to play for.
Player’s auction price becomes their salary
The amount that a franchise pays for any player becomes their salary for the season, along with applicable taxes deducted.
Entire salary belongs to player
Only the player receives the entire salary amount alone and no other person.
Salaries are paid on per-season basis
All franchises pay IPL salaries based on a per-season basis. Players who are bought for ₹10 crore received ₹10 crore for each season; this means that over a three-year contract, a player will potentially earn ₹30 crore or ₹10 crore per season.
Salaries are denominated in INR
During the start of the IPL in 2008, bid amounts and salaries were all denominated in US dollars. The league fixed the exchange rate at ₹40 per USD when using this system. However, in 2012, the league changed this system to Indian rupees (INR).
Retained players can receive salary hikes
The franchise usually pays the same salary to a retained player who stays for the next season. However, the team can also offer a raise during contract negotiations, and retained players usually receive salary hikes.
Pro-rata payments
Players who pull out due to injury before the start of the season will not receive pay. However, if a player is available just for a fixed number of matches, the franchise will pay him on a pro-rata basis. This type of payment usually comes along with a 10% retainer.
Players release terms
Players who wish to be released before their contract expires can simply do so by asking the franchise. However, if a team chooses to release a player before the end of the contract, they will have to pay the player the full amount of his contract, irrespective of how many matches he played.
Medical expense coverage
Each franchise has to pay the medical expense of treatment for players who get injured during the tournament.
Player salary payment
Franchises are not required to pay player salaries in one go. Some franchises pay the full amount to their players at the first team camp before the start of the tournament. Meanwhile, some franchises pay 50% before the tournament and 50% throughout the tournament. Some others also follow the 15-65-20 formula, where they pay 15% a week before the tournament starts, 65% throughout the tournament, and then the remaining 20% after the tournament ends.
