IPL 2023 rain rules and what happens if a match is interrupted by bad weather
Although the IPL 2023 is scheduled for the Indian summer, most days of the season are likely to be cloudy. The rare summer shower used to occur, but this year’s weather is incredibly unpredictable. In fact, rain on the day of the game put the season opener in Ahmedabad in jeopardy. But the rain gods held off, allowing the crowd to enjoy the entire game. On every day, though, it might not be the same.
Thunderstorms are expected in the majority of the nation, including Mohali, Lucknow, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, all of which will host IPL matches. So what happens if it rains when an IPL 2023 game is in progress?

The T20 format is used for IPL matches (20 overs for each team). Also, the game shall be finished in 3 hours and 20 minutes, which includes the innings break and any strategic time-outs. However, there is an additional 60 to hour window to finish the match if bad weather or any other circumstances postpone it. What is the additional time for the two games on a day with a doubleheader?
The cutoff time is 7:50 PM IST for matches that begin at 3:30 PM IST if there is a delay caused by bad weather or another circumstance. The extension window is open for the 7:30 PM IST match till 11:50 PM IST.
For the avoidance of ambiguity, if more time is needed, it will be used in the order listed below. When a game is delayed or interrupted, the sixty minutes of additional time are to be used first, then the period allotted for “time outs,” and finally the innings-change interval is to be shortened (if applicable).
So, how many overs are necessary for a game to end successfully? According to the rules of the game, if a conclusion is not reached earlier, a minimum of 5 overs must be bowled to the team batting second in order for a match to be considered complete. Thus, at least 5 overs must be faced by each team for a decision to be made.
However, if the weather or other interruptions are brief, the number of overs is decreased while still taking into account how long the game will be played. In the event that play is halted during the two innings by rain, the outcome will also be determined using the Duckworth Lewis Stren method.
The game will be deemed a draw with both clubs sharing a point in the league stages if it is also not achievable during the remaining allowed playing time, including the extra window.
