With the pride of holding the honor of the World’s most prestigious T20 league, the IPL has always been a money making cricketing fiesta. Not only does it fill in the pockets for BCCI, but also for the different teams involved in the IPL. But with the IPL 2021 edition getting postponed due to surge in the Covid-19 cases across the nation and different teams, how much loss does the BCCI suffers from?

IPL 2021 Suspension Impact: Loss to be suffered by BCCI after IPL 2021 Suspension?

According to a BCCI official during the announcement of IPL 2021 being postponed, the BCCI is set to incur a loss of INR 2000-2500 Crore. This includes the biggest loss BCCI would have to face from their broadcasting partner, Star Sports.

The latter company has a 5-year contract with BCCI which is worth INR 16,347 Crore, which accounts for INR 3,629 Crore per season. With the people getting postponed mid-way BCCI would earn INR 1,580 Crore out of roughly estimated INR 3,270 Crore. This results in BCCI suffering a loss of INR. 1,690 Crore from only their broadcasting partner.

Loss Suffered By IPL’s Sponsors

Apart from this loss, BCCI will suffer losses form their other major sponsors as well, be it- VIVO, Unacademy, Dream 11, Cred, Upstox and Tata Motors, who pay an average sum of INR 120 Crore. To sum up this, the loss of such huge amount of money from IPL 2021’s suspension will also reduce the central revenue pool for the season to nearly half or even less.

IPL 2021 Resume

Having said that, the same BCCI official also stated that the IPL 2021 edition is not canceled and not postponed as the likely window to resume the 14th edition will be decided upon next week. Stating the same, the remainder of IPL 2021 will be played only once the BCCI and IPL Governing Council get a clearance to hold the entire tournament in Mumbai, wherein all the teams can be in different Bio-Bubbles.
