IPL 2021 Postponed: A BCCI source spoke about how the BCCI was extremely interested in holding the tournament in England
Ever since IPL 2021 was stalled owing to a slew of COVID positive cases in teams, rumours have been rife about the new venue for the event. With the Coronavirus pandemic leaving India in turmoil, the country has all been taken off the list for hosting the remainder of the campaign.
A multitude of venues have been talked about for restarting the marquee T20 league. The Sri Lankan cricket board went as far as to extend its services to India by offering to be the new venue for IPL 2021.
IPL 2021 Postponed: New IPL 2021 Venue
However, as per a BCCI source, the Indian cricketing body is currently eyeing a restart in England. Speaking ahead of the BCCI’s SGM which will be held on May 29, the source spoke about how England was the BCCI’s first choice.
However, he was quick to add that England would only be further explored as an option as long as it was viable on a monetary basis to hold the league there. In case staggering costs arise, the league will be shifted away to UAE.
“Only if costs are escalating to a point (in England) where it starts affecting stakeholders, the BCCI will consider the UAE as the second option for the IPL. On that front, we aren’t even discounting the idea of hosting the IPL in Sri Lanka,” sources add, calling the island country “a friendly cricketing nation,” the BCCI source said to Times of India.
IPL 2021 New Window
Unfortunately for the BCCI, nailing down on a new venue isn’t the only cause of concern at the moment. The governing council also has to find a new window to hold the remaining of its 31 matches.
Given the hectic and congested international schedule with the T20 World Cup also scheduled for this year, the BCCI is set to find itself in a pickle when it comes to holding the IPL. Any news of a potential window continues to remain in the air.
