For the unversed, the United States team, sponsored by the Mathematical Association of Americaโs American Mathematics Competitions (MAA AMC), has secured First Place in the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which was held from July 11 to 22, 2024, in Bath, United Kingdom.
In addition to securing the first place, the 6 high school team members also received medals for their outstanding individual performances.

For the unfamiliar, the IMO aka International Mathematical Olympiad is the worldโs premier high school mathematics competition, attracting the best young mathematicians from around the globe.
This year, 108 countries and 609 students competed in the competition. With scoring 192 points, US team members earned the first place.
Though each student is ranked individually as well based on the solutions they provide for at least 6 challenging problems. From the US team members, 16-year-old Alexander Wang and 18-year-old Jessica Wan are placed in the top 5 individual rankings with 3rd and 5th place respectively. As per reports, Jessica Wan is the first young woman to join the USA International Mathematical Olympiad team since 2007.
The teamโs coach John Berman and deputy coach Carl Schildkraut guided the members with an intensive training at the MAA Mathematical Olympiad Summer program.
Let us remind you, students qualify for the USA IMO team through a series of competitions organized by the MAA AMC.
Each year, approximately 300,000 K-12 students from over 6,000 schools and learning centers worldwide participate in these competitions.

Participants from the MAA AMC program are also featured on other countriesโ IMO teams, including Canada, India, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan etc.
