Just two weeks are left before the Tokyo Olympics begins and this is a great platform, where athletes from all around the world get an opportunity to showcase their talent and play against some of the best players in the respective field. And as we all know that a mascot is usually used to advertise and market the games to the younger audience.
Tokyo 2021 Olympics Mascot
The official mascot for 2021 Summer Olympics is Miraitowa and the official mascot for the 2021 Summer Paralympics is Someity. Both the marquee events are going to be held in Tokyo, in July and August repectively.
The Tokyo Organizing Committee had decided the mascots on 22nd July, 2018, just five months after, the design of the mascot was decided. A total of 30 names were chosen to decide the name of the mascot, after getting a feedback from the designer and a poll among 7,000 students was also conducted for the same. This is the 26th official mascot for the marquee event.
Artist behind the Olympic mascot 2021 edition
The artist who designed these mascots is Taniguchi Ryo. He was selected on the basis of the competition, which he had won and also received a total of 109,041 votes. Ryo is a illustrator from Fukuoka and graduated from a Community college from California.
How the Tokyo Olympics mascot was selected and the name?
The names of the mascots Miraitowa and Someity were decided on 22nd July 2018, but were selected as mascots on 28th February 2018. It was selected by more than 16000 children from Japanese elementary schools from within and outside of Japan.
The Tokyo Organizing Committee had conducted competition between late 2017 and early 2018, in order to decide the mascots for both summer Olympics and Paralympics as well. A total of 2,042 applicants participated in this competition, which consisted of three phases and the top three got shortlisted.
Design for the mascots of Tokyo Olympics 2021
The design of Miraitowa, the mascot for the Summer Olympics, consists of a blue chequered pattern, and is quite similar to the official logo of the games. The chequered pattern represents “both old tradition and new pattern.” The term “Miraitowa” consists of two Japanese names ‘Mirai’ and ‘Towa.’ The word ‘Mirai’ means future and ‘Towa’ means eternity. The objective behind choosing this name for the mascot is to promote the future of hope in people across the world.
