Between 1974 and 1976, it was a non-tour event, then from 1977 to 1986, it was a Grand Prix Tennis Tour subsidiary tournament. However, in 1987, it was elevated to the Grand Prix Super Series, a nine-tournament series that ranks just after the four majors and the year-end finals in terms of prominence. It replaced the Philadelphia Indoor event as the year’s opening Super Series event.
