The national marathon record is the longest-standing one in Indian sports and has not been challenged since 1978. However, five national records were broken at the Olympics.

India’s first-ever athletics medal was won by Neeraj Chopra in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, which marked a dramatic shift in the country’s focus to track and field contests.
The javelin throw that won Neeraj Chopra the gold, measuring 87.58 metres, wasn’t his personal best or the record for India.

100m national record
Amlan Borgohain now holds the 100-meter record after finishing in 10.25 seconds at the All India Inter Railway Athletics Championship in Raebareli in 2022.
Dutee Chand holds the national record for the women’s 100-meter race with a time of 11.17 seconds at the Indian Grand Prix IV in Patiala in 2021.
200m national record
Amlan Borgohain ran the men’s 200-meter final of the Federation Cup 2022 in 20.52 seconds, shattering Muhammed Anas Yahiya’s previous national record of 20.63 seconds, which he had set at a competition in the Czech Republic back in 2018.
Saraswati Saha holds the national record for the women’s division in India with a time of 22.82 at the National Circuit Meet in Ludhiana in 2002.
400m national record
Muhammad Anas Yahiya currently holds the record for this event, finishing in 45.21 seconds at the 2019 Kladno Athletics competition in the Czech Republic.
At the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, Hima Das set the bar for the women’s division with a time of 50.79.
800m national record
Jinson Johnson currently holds the 800-meter record, clocking a time of 1:45.65 at the Guwahati National Inter-State Championship in 2018.
With a time of 1:59.17, Tintu Luka holds the record for the women’s division. She achieved this time in Split, Croatia during the 2010 Continental Cup.
1500m national record
Jinson Johnson also holds the record for the 1500 metres with a time of 3:35.24 at the ISTAF Berlin competition in 2019.
The current record belongs to Harmilan Bains, who finished the women’s division at the 2021 National Open Championships in Warangal in 4:05.39.
