Their motivation derives from worries over the Modi administration’s purported targeting of Muslims and other religious minorities, which they see as a violation of religious freedom. Not so surprisingly, Ilhan Omar, a Muslim congresswoman for the US Democratic Party, has also joined this boycott.

On Twitter, Ilhan wrote,

“Prime Minister Modi’s government has repressed religious minorities, emboldened violent Hindu nationalist groups, and targeted journalists and human rights advocates with impunity. I will NOT be attending Modi’s speech.”

Known for her critical stance towards India, Ilhan Omar’s participation further strengthens the growing movement within the Democratic Party as its members assert their concerns by abstaining from attending Modi’s joint address to Congress.
