Swiatek has been the most dominant player on the WTA tour this season which has made her everyone’s favourite. The player has made everyone her fan the way she has influenced everyone with her brilliant performance booking her place at the top of the WTA Rankings.

While on the other hand, the No. 28-ranked Qinwen Zheng had to go through the qualifying rounds due to the competitiveness of the field in San Diego. She defeated Rebecca Marino in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, but lost to Camila Osorio in three.

Elena Rybakina’s outlook on life changed after she withdrew due to illness. She eliminated the Kazakh by defeating two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza in the first round. Zheng swiftly established a 5-0 advantage as the Spaniard was experiencing some physical issues. The Chinese then advanced to the next round after Muguruza retired.

Zheng has had quite the San Diego rollercoaster, but she has made it to the next round. She still has enough match play experience from competing in the qualifiers, even though she didn’t get the chance to put herself to the full test against Muguruza in the previous round. At this point, Zheng faces a hard challenge in Swiatek. She was the only participant in her French Open run to win a set over the World No. 1 player. Although she had strangling throughout that match, she still showed a lot of promise. The young Chinese player excels at both complimentary groundstrokes and a solid serve.

After challenging loss against Krejcikova earlier this week, the World No. will be attempting trebound. Every competition in which the Pole took part this year saw at least one victory. Given her performance this season thus far, Zheng is unlikely to break this run in her opening game here.
