“I look nothing like her,” Priyanka Chopra Admits Someone From Northeast India Should Have Played The Role Of Mary Kom

Priyanka Chopra who had portrayed the role of boxer MC Mary Kom in her biopic believes an actor from the Northeast should have been given the opportunity

Ever since she’s moved to the US and decided to make a career for herself in Hollywood, Priyanka Chopra has been on a spree of interviews, ones where she’s gone onto make a string of outlandish statements.

Among the most notable of those was her claims of having asthma as she implored people to not burst crackers during Diwali. Despite her whims and fancies during her plea, the actress was seen on manifold occasions smoking cigars and indulging in fireworks with her husband Nick Jonas, visuals which have not gone unnoticed.

Priyanka Chopra Says An Actor From The Northeast Should Have Played The Role Of Mary Kom

She’s back again with Chopra who is the cover girl for ‘Vanity Fair’ magazine’s February issue sitting down with the magazine for an interview. And during it, she spoke about the Bollywood movie she had done on boxer Mary Kom with her talking about how a person from the Northeast should have been asked to portray the boxer.

For Chopra to come out with the statement years after the movie has been released to try and mantain a pious and holier than thou image is extremely convenient. Had she really cared about ensuring Mary Kom was given justice to, she would have adamantly denied taking up the role and discarding the crores she was paid for it. However, as is often the case with the entertainment industry, its all about playing to cameras and saying what sounds good.

“When I played Mary Kom, I was very skeptical taking it on in the beginning because she was a living, breathing icon and she made place for so many female athletes.

“Plus, I look nothing like her. She comes from the northeast of India and I am from northern India and we physically didn’t look alike. In hindsight, the part should have probably gone to someone from the Northeast.

Later, she also added that, “But I was just greedy as an actor to get a chance to tell her story because she inspired me so much, as a woman, as an Indian woman, as an athlete. When the filmmakers insisted I do it, I was just like, ‘You know what? I’m going to do it,” Chopra said.
