Magnus Carlsen, the five-time world chess champion and current leader in the game, has declared that he will not be defending his World Championship 2022 title, know if he has retired from chess

The world has taken aback by the latest announcement from the Norwegian grandmaster, Magnus Carlsen who is reigning as the world chess champion since 2013.

Last year, he successfully he defended his title against Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi, but he believes he has no “inclination” to compete in the 2023 championships.

Carlsen announced this decision on a podcast called “The Magnus Effect” on 19th July 2022. He said, “I feel I don’t have a lot to gain, I don’t particularly like [the championship matches], and although I’m sure a match would be interesting for historical reasons and all of that, I don’t have any inclination to play and I will simply not play the match.”

As reported by Chess.com, Carlsen earlier expressed his doubts about a career in chess back in December 2021.

In the podcast, Carlsen also mentioned that he is only retiring for the tournament and will continue to play chess. He will participate in the upcoming Chess Olympiad that is to be held in Chennai, India later this month.

“Just so there is no ambiguity here: I’m not retiring from chess. I’m going to be an active player. I’m leaving later today to go to Croatia to play the Grand Chess Tour. From there on I’m going to go to Chennai to play the Olympiad, which is going to be a lot of fun, and the Norwegian team is seeded as number four there.”

Born in 1993, Carlsen rose to fame at a young age and quickly became one of the top players in the world. He has since won numerous championships and accolades, including the World Chess Championship in 2013. Carlsen comes from Norvegian ethnicity and resides in the country’s capital, Oslo.

Carlsen earned the title of Grandmaster (GM) in 2004 and is the highest-rated player in the world. His current rating is 2864 Std Chess, as reported on the FIDE website.

He founded his business, Play Magnus in 2013 which has a market capitalisation value of $115 million USD.
